David Armanini
Fellow, CRI
Dr. David Armanini obtained his PhD in 2009 while working on a joint research project held by Prof. Rossaro from the University of Milan and Dr. Buffagni from the Water Research Institute - National Research Council.
Dr. David G. Armanini's expertise is in ecological quality assessment, eco-hydrology and functional diversity in freshwater ecosystems. He has been involved in several European co-funded projects, such as the FP5 STAR (Standardisation of River Classifications), the FP6 Rebecca (Relations between ecological and chemical status of surface waters) and the FP6 Eurolimpacs (Integrated project to evaluate impacts of global change on European freshwater ecosystems). He has also been directly involved in the implementation of the Water Framework Directive in Italy and Cyprus. Within this Framework, he has focused on stream type and reference condition identification, benthic invertebrate sampling and the definition of ecological status.
In 2009 and 2010 he was a postdoctoral fellow and worked with Dr. Donald Baird at Environment Canada and the Canadian Rivers Institute. He has been involved in the development of the Atlantic Canada Reference Condition Model, of a flow sensitivity index based on benthic macro-invertebrate taxonomy and of biological traits-based approaches to advance bioassessment methods.
In 2010 he became the Managing Director of Prothea, an environmental firm based in Milan, Italy. The company is active in renewable energies, water protection and environmental education. In the water sector, he is leading the implementation of projects in Europe, Canada and Africa focused on development of bio-assessment systems, environmental impact assessment and management of water resources. They are active both in applied and research projects with ongoing cooperation with leading research institution in Europe and North America.
Dr. Armanini has been a Science Director at the Canadian Rivers Institute since 2011.
