Canadian River Institute Fellows share the goals and objectives of the Canadian Rivers Institute and have as their primary focus interest in expanding and promoting research on rivers and their estuaries.

Canadian Rivers Institute Associates are designated annually by their Fellow in their Canadian River Institute Member Network Agreements as participating in research, education and training recognized as supporting the purpose and aims of the Institute.

Honorary Members and Emeritus Fellows have been recognized by the Fellows for long-term unequivocal support of the Canadian Rivers Institute’s purpose and aims.

Dr. Consuelo (Coqui) Aguilar is a Research Professor in the Department of the Studies for the Sustainable Development of Coastal Zones at the University of Guadalajara, Mexico. Her expertise is in estuarine and coastal fish ecology.

Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Waterloo. He is interested in the fluid and sediment transport mechanics of rivers and how human activities affect change in river form and function.

DAVID ARMANINI

Dr. David Armanini is Managing Director of Prothea Group, Milan, Italy. His expertise is in ecological quality assessment, eco-hydrology and functional diversity in freshwater ecosystems.

Dr. Donald Baird is a Research Scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada and a Visiting Research Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of New Brunswick.  His expertise is in ecological risk assessment, with particular expertise in the development of diagnostic approaches to study human impacts.

Dr. Glenn Benoy is the Director, Science & Engineering to the Canadian Section of the International Joint Commission in Ottawa, Ontario.

Dr. Leif Burge is a professor at Okanagan College and a Senior Scientist, Fluvial Geomorphology with Stantec.  His expertise is in solving applied river problems using hydraulic modelling, sediment management, sediment transport, river patterns, fluvial habitat, river stability, and rive restoration.

Dr. Simon Courtenay is a Professor in the School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability at the University of Waterloo.  His expertise is in the development of monitoring programs that detect impacts of human activities and cumulative effects on aquatic ecology.

Dr. Anne Crémazy is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biology at the University of New Brunswick (Saint John). Her lab broadly studies the fate and effects of trace metals in natural waters.

Dr. Karen Kidd is the Jarislowsky Chair in Environment and Health & Professor in the School of Geography and Earth Sciences at McMaster University. Her expertise is in contamination in fish and other aquatic life and the effection of human activities on aquatic ecosystem health.

Jennifer Lento

Dr. Jennifer Lento is a Research Scientist with the Canadian Rivers Institute based in the Department of Biology at the University of New Brunswick (Fredericton). Her expertise is in biomonitoring and assessing structural and functional diversity of food webs, particularly in Arctic freshwaters. 

 

Tommi Linnansaari

Dr. Tommi Linnansaari is a Professor at the Department of Biology and Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Management, University of New Brunswick, where he holds the Atlantic Salmon Research Chair. He is the Research Coordinator of the Collaboration for Atlantic Salmon Tomorrow (CAST).

KERRY MACQUARRIE

Dr. Deborah MacLatchy is the President and Vice-chancellor and professor of Biology at Wilfrid Laurier University. Her expertise is in developing fish bioassays for assessment of mechanisms of action of aquatic endocrine disruptors and in investigating source contaminants of pulp & paper and other wastewater producers.

Dr. Kerry MacQuarrie is a professor in the Civil Engineering Department at the University of New Brunswick.  His expertise is in the transport and fate of contaminants in the subsurface and the use of hydraulic, thermal, and geochemical information to understand groundwater-surface water interactions.

 

CHRIS MARTYNIUK

Dr. Chris Martyniuk is an associate professor in the Centre for Environmental and Human Toxicology and Department of Physiological Sciences at the University of Florida.  His expertise is in using omics approaches and biochemistry to study organismal responses to aquatic pollutants such as endocrine disrupting chemicals.

Wendy Monk

Dr. Wendy Monk is a Research Scientist in the Watershed Hydrology and Ecology Research Division with Environment and Climate Change Canada, based at the Canadian Rivers Institute, and also holds a Visiting Research Professor position in the Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Management at the University of New Brunswick (Fredericton).

Kelly Munkittrick

Kelly Munkittrick is a Professor in Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary, and the CAIP Chair in Ecosystem Health Assessment.  His expertise is in the design of monitoring frameworks, improving the sensitivity of monitoring programs to detect environmental impacts of stressors on fish, and designing novel approaches to optimize these programs in terms of sensitivity and relevance.

Dr. Jessica Orlofske is an associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.  Her expertise is in invertebrate ecology and conservation with an emphasis on the application of aquatic invertebrates for monitoring ecosystem health.

Dr. Scott A. Pavey is an assistant professor and a Canada Research Chair of Aquatic Molecular Ecology and Ecological Genomics at the Department of Biology at the University of New Brunswick.  His expertise is in using state-of-the-art technologies and scientific techniques to address basic and applied questions in conservation, fisheries management, and ecological genomics.

Dr. Kurt Samways is Parks Canada Research Chair in River Restoration in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of New Brunswick Saint John Campus. His expertise is in the ecological linkages between freshwater and marine ecosystems, and the sustainability of fish populations.

Dr. Mark R. Servos is a professor and the Canada Research Chair in Water Quality Protection in the Department of Biology at the University of Waterloo. His expertise is in treatment, exposure, fate and effects of organic contaminants in the environment.

Dr. André St-Hilaire is a professor in Hydrology at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) at the Université du Québec.  His expertise is in environmental hydrology, particularily hydrological extremes as well as hydrological, habitat, and water quality modelling.

Dr. Michael van den Heuvel was the first Institute Director; outside of the University of New Brunswick, expanding CRI’s credibility as a national institute. He is the Canada Research Chair in Watershed Ecological Integrity, studies the effects of agriculture and chemical use on freshwater and coastal environments.
