Canadian River Institute Fellows share the goals and objectives of the Canadian Rivers Institute and have as their primary focus interest in expanding and promoting research on rivers and their estuaries.
Canadian Rivers Institute Associates are designated annually by their Fellow in their Canadian River Institute Member Network Agreements as participating in research, education and training recognized as supporting the purpose and aims of the Institute.

Dr. Donald Baird is a Research Scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada and a Visiting Research Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of New Brunswick. His expertise is in ecological risk assessment, with particular expertise in the development of diagnostic approaches to study human impacts.

Dr. Allen Curry is a professor in the Department of Biology and the Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Management at the University of New Brunswick. His expertise is in the ecology of fishes, food webs and ecosystems, and rivers and their lands.

Dr. Deborah MacLatchy is the President and Vice-chancellor and professor of Biology at Wilfrid Laurier University. Her expertise is in developing fish bioassays for assessment of mechanisms of action of aquatic endocrine disruptors and in investigating source contaminants of pulp & paper and other wastewater producers.

Dr. Kerry MacQuarrie is a professor in the Civil Engineering Department at the University of New Brunswick. His expertise is in the transport and fate of contaminants in the subsurface and the use of hydraulic, thermal, and geochemical information to understand groundwater-surface water interactions.

Dr. Chris Martyniuk is an associate professor in the Centre for Environmental and Human Toxicology and Department of Physiological Sciences at the University of Florida. His expertise is in using omics approaches and biochemistry to study organismal responses to aquatic pollutants such as endocrine disrupting chemicals.

Kelly Munkittrick is a Professor in Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary, and the CAIP Chair in Ecosystem Health Assessment. His expertise is in the design of monitoring frameworks, improving the sensitivity of monitoring programs to detect environmental impacts of stressors on fish, and designing novel approaches to optimize these programs in terms of sensitivity and relevance.

Dr. Scott A. Pavey is an assistant professor and a Canada Research Chair of Aquatic Molecular Ecology and Ecological Genomics at the Department of Biology at the University of New Brunswick. His expertise is in using state-of-the-art technologies and scientific techniques to address basic and applied questions in conservation, fisheries management, and ecological genomics.

Dr. Kurt Samways is Parks Canada Research Chair in River Restoration in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of New Brunswick Saint John Campus. His expertise is in the ecological linkages between freshwater and marine ecosystems, and the sustainability of fish populations.

Dr. André St-Hilaire is a professor in Hydrology at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) at the Université du Québec. His expertise is in environmental hydrology, particularily hydrological extremes as well as hydrological, habitat, and water quality modelling.

Dr. Michael van den Heuvel was the first Institute Director; outside of the University of New Brunswick, expanding CRI’s credibility as a national institute. He is the Canada Research Chair in Watershed Ecological Integrity, studies the effects of agriculture and chemical use on freshwater and coastal environments.
