Training citizen scientists to monitor rivers

December 15, 2016

CRI has helped train more than 1,000 new water stewards across the country who now contribute river health data as part of federal government assessment and action programming in watersheds and waterways across the country. In partnership with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), CRI researchers have developed and delivered nationally standardized methods for assessing river health that community groups and volunteers can use to become official stewards of their local rivers and streams. CRI researchers and their ECCC partners teach enthusiastic participants how to collect and identify benthic invertebrates, and how to analyze what they tell them about a river’s health.
