Fish Ageing

Dr. Tommi Linnansaari (CRI Fellow) oversees the CRI Fish Ageing Services and can provide technical services related to methods for ageing structure collection and subsequent lab analyses.  We have an Isomet 1000 precision diamond saw used to section calcified ageing structures.  Sections can be mounted onto slides to view using a microscope/fiche readers and/or digital imaging hardware and software.

CRI Fish Ageing Services has decades of experience collecting, identifying, and assessing fish health using life history characteristics such as meristics, morphometrics, condition, maturity, sex, diet, parasite loadings, prevalence, and ageing and age calculations for scales, otoliths, fin rays, opercula, and cleithra.

Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC) Measures

Two or three readers read each set of samples of ageing structures.  The samples are read by an individual and then re-read blind.  Blind implies that the reader has no knowledge of the sample identification, size of fish, etc.  All samples are then read blind by a second reader. This means each sample is read three times.  The results are then used to provide an error rate associated with each sample and each project.  If the three results are not within the accepted error rate (CV < 10%), then the sample will go on for further independent verification and analysis
