CRI Electrofishing Online and Field Certification Program
Backpack electrofishing training is overseen by Dr. Michelle Gray’s lab and research group and supported by the CRI Training and Professional Development division. The electrofishing program and certificate is recognized by the federal department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO ) as an accepted backpack electrofishing training course.
The Electrofishing course runs from 1 May 2025 to 30 September 2025. New Registration LINK coming soon.
Course Overview
Electrofishing is a commonly used fish collection method in streams, rivers, and lakes. Although not legislated in most provinces in Canada (except for BC), electrofishing training provides employers with evidence of due diligence and provides trainees with adequate knowledge of the risks and safety features of these machines.

Details
This course is considered a ‘blended’ course – course materials are delivered via an online course and then all participants must complete a field practicum (half day). The online materials are delivered using an online learning management system called Desire2Learn. Participants must complete the online component (pass is 80% on final quizzes), a minimum of 48 hours before attending their designated field practicum.
The online course and backpack field practicum are available in both English and French.
It can take up to 5 days from the date of payment to gain access to the online materials. Please register well in advance of field training to ensure timely and sufficient access to the online materials before the field practicum. Electrofishing certificate recipients should re-certify within every 5 years to refresh their skills and update their certificate.
All participants must have first aid and CPR training to receive their electrofishing certificate, which can be completed after the field session.
If you are completing the "refresher" electrofishing training, you are only required to attend the practical field session.
Field Training
Participants must complete online tests 1 and 2 before attending the field training. Field training sessions are normally scheduled for 4 hours running from 9:30 am - 1:30 pm, please bring a bagged lunch or snacks, if you would like, as there is time to eat while waiting for your turn in the water.
Please bring:
Non-breathable chest waders
If available, a lifejacket or personal flotation device
If available, polarized sunglasses and a brimmed hat
Water
You may also want sunscreen and/or bug spray depending on the conditions.
Course Instructors
Dr. Michelle Gray, PhD, Canadian Rivers Institute and Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Management, University of New Brunswick. Michelle has over 20 years of lab and field experience in aquatic ecotoxicology, monitoring, and assessment. Michelle developed the online electrofishing course in 2006 and continues to facilitate and instruct both the online and field components.
Carole-Anne Gillis, PhD.
Carole-Anne has 13 years experience in monitoring and characterizing aquatic species and habitats. She is the Scientific Director of the Restigouche River Watershed Management Council (RRWMC) since 2014. She has been certified in backpack electrofishing since 2009 and will be responsible for the delivery of the French backpack electrofishing field practicum component of the course.
The CRI is partnered with the College of Extended Learning to increase the quality and efficiency of program registration and delivery of this CRI signature course. ForEM is responsible for the registration process, client relations, and the delivery of courses.
NOTE: Other dates and/or locations within New Brunswick will be possible with sufficient notice, participant demand, and availability of Instructor to travel.

La pêche électrique s’avère un outil efficace d’échantillonnage de poissons fréquemment utilisée en rivière et petits cours d’eau. Bien qu’elle ne soit pas légiférée dans la plupart des provinces au Canada (à l'exception de la Colombie-Britannique), la certification de pêche électrique fournit aux employeurs des attestations professionnelles et fournit aux participants une qualification adéquate notamment en lien aux risques et les paramètres de sécurité de cet instrument.

Ce cours est une combinaison d’une partie théorique en ligne et tous les participants doivent compléter leur certification terrain (demi-journée). Le contenu du cours en ligne est disponible via la plateforme d’apprentissage « Desire2Learn ». Les participants doivent compléter la composante théorique en ligne (résultats d’évaluations d’au moins 80%), au moins 48 heures avant d'assister à leur stage de terrain désigné.
Nous vous recommandons de vous inscrire bien avant votre certification terrain afin que vous ayez accès au contenu théorique et réussi vos évaluations. De plus, vous devriez refaire votre certification tous les 5 ans afin de faire la mise à jour de vos compétences.
Tous les participants doivent posséder une formation en premiers soins et en RCR pour recevoir leur certification de pêche électrique. Cette exigence peut être complétée après la certification terrain.
Si vous avez déjà reçu votre certification, vous pouvez sélectionner le cours « Mise à jour ». Vous serez tenus d’assister la certification terrain uniquement.
Le Canadian Rivers Institute (CRI) utilise les services de la Faculté de foresterie et de gestion de l'environnement de l'Université du Nouveau-Brunswick (ForEM) et du College of Extended Learning pour accroître la qualité et l'efficacité de l'inscription et de la distribution des programmes de formation et de perfectionnement professionnel du CRI. Dre Michelle Gray, Ph.D., CRI et Faculté des forêts et de la gestion de l'environnement, Université du Nouveau-Brunswick. Michelle a près de 20 ans d'expérience en laboratoire et sur le terrain en matière d'écotoxicologie aquatique et suivis environnementaux. En 2006, Michelle a créé le cours en ligne de pêche électrique et elle continue de soutenir et d'enseigner à la fois la composante en ligne et la certification terrain.
Carole-Anne Gillis, PhD. Biologiste de formation, Carole-Anne a 12 ans d’expérience dans le suivi et la caractérisation des espèces et des habitats aquatiques. Elle est Directrice scientifique du Conseil de Gestion du Bassin Versant de la rivière Restigouche depuis 2014. Elle est certifiée en pêche électrique depuis 2009 et elle est responsable de la certification terrain francophone de pêche électrique par sac à dos.
